Seagrass Basket Weaving Class with Sandy Martin

Report on Beginner’s Basket Class

By Sandy Martin

The Beginner’s Twined Seagrass Basket Class was held on April 16th .  Eight of the ten members who were registered were able to attend.

After learning about the materials and tools to be used and some basic basketry terms, the students were given a demonstration of the twining technique to be used on their baskets.  They then began on their own baskets.  As in all classes, the members worked at different speeds and at the end of the day, some had finished and some had not.  Those who had not finished took home the beads and dyed seagrass needed to complete their basket.

Throughout the afternoon, there was lots of enthusiasm, laughter, fun, and good-natured teasing among the students.  Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and everyone seemed to be pleased with their basket, I hope.

As the instructor, I want to thank everyone for taking the class and showing the interest and enthusiasm that made it fun for me to share my knowledge of basket making.  I learned from you and will be a better teacher for it.  Thank you too for staying after and working hard to make sure that the room was left in great shape.

And I want to take this opportunity to thank the Guild for asking me to do the program on my baskets.  I appreciated your interest in how I became a basket maker and your questions and compliments about the baskets that I brought to discuss.

May Class on Overshot Weaving

Deanna Grider presented a program on overshot, covering the basics and sharing samples.  In the afternoon, Deanna guided a group in developing a unique overshot pattern using a method called “name drafting” or “name code.”  Many wonderful patterns were the result and will be woven into pieces that can be displayed at the Show and Sale in the fall.
